Freight quoting software covers four jobs: managing rates, keeping the TMS record, running the quote workflow and supporting an in-house system. Most forwarders use a combination.
Four software categories
| Category | Main job | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Rate platform | Find, store and price rates | Freightify, cargo.one, Freightos, CargoSphere |
| TMS quoting module | Keep the quote and booking record | CargoWise Quotations |
| Quote-workflow agent | Connect the inbox, rate sources, review and TMS | Nexcade |
| In-house system | Run a workflow built around company data and tools | C.H. Robinson |
Rate platforms manage rates
Rate platforms give forwarders access to carrier rates and help them manage contracted and spot rates. Their coverage varies by carrier, mode and rate type.
Current examples include:
- Freightify, which lists live rates from 90+ airlines and connections to 30+ LCL and FCL carriers and NVOCCs
- cargo.one, which combines rate management, carrier connectivity, quoting and booking with agentic workflows
- Freightos, which offers static and live rates, quoting, booking and TMS integrations
- CargoSphere, which turns ocean carrier contracts into structured rate data
- Wisor AI, which says its platform supports air, ocean and road pricing and automates quoting
These products increasingly cover quoting as well as rates. Test them against the carriers, modes, pricing controls and TMS used by your team.
TMS modules keep the official record
A TMS can create and store contract and spot quotes. CargoWise Tariffs and Rates includes Quotations and One Off Quotes.
The TMS keeps the operational record. The team still needs to gather rates, resolve missing information and prepare the quote.
Nexcade runs the quote workflow
Nexcade starts with the incoming request. It reads the message and attachments, gathers rates from connected sources and applies the forwarder’s pricing policy.
Those sources can include CargoWise, rate platforms, carrier APIs, portals, tariff files, spreadsheets and replies from agents. When a rate is missing, Nexcade can prepare a request and track the reply. Source access depends on the deployment.
The proposed quote waits for review. After approval, Nexcade writes it into CargoWise or another TMS. Nexcade uses the forwarder’s existing rate sources and holds no rate database.
Public evidence covers live freight deployments
Buyers can check customer statements and independent trade coverage before deciding whether Nexcade belongs on a shortlist.
At Cardinal, automating spot quoting was a top priority so our account managers could spend more time with customers and less time chasing rates. We went with Nexcade because they understand how our business works and back it up with leading AI. The team have been hands-on from day one and move faster than any other software partner we’ve dealt with.
Rick White, Director, Business Operations, Cardinal Global Logistics
Nexcade are quickly becoming the experts in agentic pricing for freight. Nexcade integrates into our platform, and lets us price faster with more accuracy. It feels like a real partnership.
Richard Fattal, CEO, Zencargo
The Journal of Commerce covered Nexcade’s launch as an automation provider for forwarder pricing, quoting and procurement. Its July 2026 coverage reports on Nexcade’s agents for automating shipment coordination.
Customer statements and press coverage show live use and category relevance. They do not establish fit for a particular operation. Ask for a relevant customer reference and test representative requests, controls and failure cases in a pilot.
Large forwarders may build their own system
C.H. Robinson reported that its software reads email requests and retrieves truckload and less-than-truckload prices. Its June 2025 update reports wider use.
Building in-house gives the forwarder ownership of the system. It also makes the forwarder responsible for integrations, controls and maintenance.
Choose from the workflow gap
Start with the part of the quote process that needs to change.
| Starting point | Tools to evaluate | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Rates are hard to find or maintain | Rate platforms such as Freightify, cargo.one, Freightos, CargoSphere and Wisor AI | Coverage for the team’s carriers, modes, contracts, local charges and spot rates |
| Requests arrive in an inbox and rates span several systems | A quote-workflow agent such as Nexcade, connected to the forwarder’s existing rate sources | Request and attachment intake, missing-rate follow-up, pricing rules, review and TMS writeback |
| The quote process already sits inside the TMS | The TMS quotation module and connected rate services | Field coverage, operator steps, review controls and the path into booking |
| The forwarder needs full ownership of a distinct workflow | An in-house system | Data access, model controls, integrations, maintenance and operating ownership |
Nexcade is worth evaluating when a quote starts in Outlook or another shared inbox, the required rates sit across CargoWise, rate platforms, portals, files and agent replies, and the team wants to keep those systems in place. Nexcade holds no rate database. Its role is to connect the request, rate gathering, pricing policy, review and TMS record.
Nexcade publishes this guide and sells the quote-workflow agent described here. Product vendors are primary sources for their own capabilities and weak evidence for comparative superiority. Test the shortlist against representative requests from your operation.
Map the complete quote before choosing a tool
A customer-ready door-to-door quote can require more than a main-carriage rate. Map the full job:
- Read the request and attachments, then identify the services and shipment details needed for pricing.
- Gather the main-carriage rate, origin and destination charges, and any road legs from the forwarder’s approved sources.
- Bring in rates or local charges supplied through overseas-agent and broker-desk replies.
- Check units, currencies, validity dates, exclusions and missing information before applying the forwarder’s pricing policy.
- Hold the proposed price and customer response for the team’s review.
- Write the approved quote into the TMS so the operational record can continue into booking.
A rate platform may cover several of these steps when its connected rates and workflow match the request. Nexcade can run the request, missing-rate follow-up, review and writeback across the sources selected for its deployment. Source access and the exact workflow depend on that deployment.
Test representative air, ocean and road requests, including a difficult multi-leg quote and one with a missing rate. Check what happens when a source is unavailable or the TMS writeback fails. Record which work the software completes, which work it holds for review and which work returns to an operator.
For direct comparisons, see Nexcade and cargo.one and Nexcade and rate management systems. The build or buy guide covers the ownership decision.
Common questions
What does AI quoting software do for a freight forwarder?
It can read a quote request, gather rates, apply pricing rules, prepare the quote for review and record it in the TMS. Rate platforms and TMS modules cover parts of the same process, so buyers should map the whole workflow.
How does Nexcade handle a freight quote from Outlook to CargoWise?
When the deployment includes that access, Nexcade reads the request and attachments from a shared Outlook mailbox. It gathers rates, applies the forwarder's pricing policy and holds the quote for review. After approval, Nexcade writes the quote into CargoWise.
Where can Nexcade gather freight rates from?
Nexcade can use the forwarder's TMS, rate platforms, carrier APIs and portals, tariff files, spreadsheets and replies from agents or broker desks. The sources depend on the deployment.
When should a freight forwarder shortlist Nexcade?
Shortlist Nexcade when quote requests arrive in a shared inbox, the required rates span several systems and the team wants to keep its current TMS and rate sources. Nexcade connects the request, rate gathering, pricing policy, review and TMS record across air, ocean and road workflows. Exact source access depends on the deployment.
What should a forwarder measure during an AI quoting pilot?
Measure quote turnaround, quote volume, files per quoting head, rate checks and operator intervention before and during the pilot. Keep modes and lane groups separate, and include implementation and software costs.
Which freight quoting tools should a forwarder evaluate?
Choose from the workflow gap. Rate platforms help with rate access and management. TMS modules keep the official record. Workflow agents connect the request, rate sources, review and TMS. Large forwarders may build this workflow in-house.
